President's message     (August 2008)
How is it possible that the summer is nearly a memory? You know what “they” say—the older you are, the quicker time flies!
I am looking forward to the coming SCCUU year. Our programs are both exciting and informative.
Dr. Tucker, in particular, has taken into account the desires of the fellowship as they were expressed in the evaluations
you wrote at our Annual Meeting. I am hopeful you will see a depth and breadth of topics for the coming year.

Jeanne Danek has informed me that we have three weeks that remain unscheduled, so if you have a suggestion for an
innovative or interesting program you would like to coordinate, please let me know.

As you are aware, we had no representative this year at the UUA General Assembly that took place in Salt Lake City, but 3400
other people from across the country attended. We did, however, have an opportunity to cast an absentee vote for the winning
candidate for President—Reverend Peter Morales, Senior Minister of the Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church, Golden, Colorado.

      Other highlights of the GA included:

      (1) By a margin of 13 votes, delegates defeated the Commission on Appraisal’s recommended revisions of Article 11 of the UUA
          By-laws, also known as “The Principles.”  Sentiments against the changes were essentially three:  it’s not broke, don’t fix it;
          the wording could be better; and a concern that “humanism” had not been acknowledged for its principal role as one of our sources.

      (2) Hundreds of delegates participated in a public witness at a downtown rally for Immigration Reform.

      (3) Delegates also approved congregational witness for six Immediate Witness Resolutions:
          a. Pending Legislation Toward Clean/Verified Elections in the US
          b. US Ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban
          c. Support of American’s Red Rock Wilderness Act
          d. Support Bolivian UU’s Struggling for Justice and Human Rights
          e. US-sponsored Torture: A Call for a Commission of Inquiry
          f. Oppose Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Based Violence in Iraq
      Go to www.uua.org/events/generalassembly/2009/index.shtml for more details.

Rev. Kenn Hurto, who visited our Fellowship last spring has advised us that “Unitarian Universalism is hale, hearty and challenged at this time.
At times it can feel congregational life is all about mechanics, but a GA reminds anyone attending that this exercise in democracy is founded
upon and affirming of great principles:   that everyone matters, that all should have a voice, and that, together, we are better than we are apart.

The emerging theme of our faith is that we should “stand on the side of love” in all that we do.
It is good to be reminded that this is what it is all about.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. See you in September.

• Miscellaneous Thoughts And Sayings •

"Liberal theology is not for the faint of heart.
It points us in a general direction without telling us the specific destination.
It refuses to make our commitments for us, but holds us accountable to the commitments we make ----
It invites us to live with ambiguity without giving in to facile compromise;
to engage in dialogue without trying to control the conversation;
to be open to change without accepting change too casually;
to take commitment seriously but not blindly;
to be engaged in culture without succumbing to the culture's values."
By The Rev. Dr. Paul Rasor director of the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan College
Published by "UU World" Fall 2005 Suggested by a Fellowship President

A Welcome to New Members
The Unitarian Universalist fellowship of Sun City Center is a free religious community welcoming every honest seeker of more humane and meaningful life. We are open to persons who accept the democratic method in human relationships and we welcome persons of any race, belief, sexual preference, or national origin who share our concern for the individual and society.

As we pursue our religious quest, certain general principles guide the way of our individual and collective lives.

• We believe in knowledge,
        for there is no help in ignorance.
• We believe in reason,
        for without it we can only surrender to the blind forces of prejudice.
• We believe in compassion,
        for revenge and hatred destroy the human spirit.
• We believe in love,
        for it is life's most creative power.
• We believe in celebrating the dignity and worth of every human being.
        for recognition of diversity is part of our common core.
• We offer no guarantee of a future life freed from the burdens of the present,
        but we explore and celebrate the ground we stand upon today.
• We offer no bound book of a final revelation,
        but we will share with you the loose leaf pages of an ever growing, ever changing bible of human inspiration.

Joining this Fellowship can only strengthen your ties with the world, for it signifies your dedication to the eternal quest for freedom in thought and action.
Original version by Jim Harner UU Church of Brunswick, Main - since revised.

"Unitarian Universalism is faith in people, hope for tomorrow's child, confidence in a continuity that spans all time. It looks not to a perfect heaven, but toward a good earth. It is respectful of the past, but not limited to it. It is trust in growing and conspiracy with change. It is spiritual responsibility for a moral tomorrow." --Ed Schempp, Activist 1908-2003
"The world is now too dangerous for anything but the truth, too small for anything but brotherhood. True religion, like our founding principles, requires that the rights of the disbeliever be equally acknowledged with those of the believer."--A. Powell Davies, Unitarian Minister, 1902-1957
"Stand by this faith. Work for it and sacrifice for it. There is nothing in all the world so important as to be loyal to this faith which has placed before us the loftiest ideals, which has comforted us in sorrow, strengthened us for noble duty and made the world beautiful."--Olympia Brown, Universalist Minister, 1835-1926
"We need to love from the start--not as an emergency strategy when everything has gone wrong."-- Rebecca Parker, Minister
"Each night a child is born is a holy night."--Sophia Lyon Fahs, Religious Educator 1876-1978
"Ultimately, we are all theologians. We all ponder the great life issues. As Unitarian Universalists we celebrate common operational values that unite us even as we enjoy a diversity of perspectives that enables us to learn and grow religiously."--Richard Gilbert, Minister
"The word freedom comes from an ancient Norse root verb that means to become loving. Freedom is not properly a state of being then, but more accurately a choice for becoming. So, in our religion, freedom is about becoming, never about being."--Terry Sweetser, Minister
Love is the spirit of this fellowship and service is its law.
This is our great covenant, to dwell together in peace,
To seek the truth in love, and to help one another.
