Search your mind for such poigniant moments and share them with us on this occasion. It doesn't have to be something that happened this last summer. This season reminds us of the Jewish High Holy Days of Yom Kippur, the traditional time for moral and spiritual atonement. Different religions also have this form of atonement, but another way to look at "atonement" is in the word itself: "At-One-Ment". Once we do this, we begin to see the dynamics of our spiritual evolution in a VERY different light. ....

Mar 03 Synagogue Dr. Tucker, "Saints?",-- It is timely given that 3/17 is St. Patrick's Day. However, since U.U.ism emerged from Protestant Christianity, it tends not to recognize any status of sainthood (nor the supernatural trimmings that go along with it in various religions, including in Catholic Christianity). Instead, U.U.ism highlights people who are pioneers and exemplars (see our hymnal). My sermon will trace some of the history (good and bad) of saints and will urge us toward abandoning that approach to the one which exalts (U.U.) pioneers and exemplars. Dr. Tucker

Mar 10 Synagogue Charlie Bradt,--"Spirituality", -- Each of us at least occassionally will intuit that there is more to us than the physical package of a body andthe thinking machine we call our mind. This "something more" is what I refer to as Spirit, and to explore this part of our nature is what I call SPIRITUALITY. I will recall some of the many "Mystics" among us in ancient times (Jesus, Buddha and more) and some who dwell amongst us today. A comparison will be made of the world of the mystic with our own and suggest the possibilities for our own personal encounter with their world.
Charlie Bradt has taught yoga and meditation for 20 years and for even longer has been a student of those who suggest an alternative life path to the one we grow up with, and has taught through his discoveries of these paths.
Mar 17 Synagogue Rev. Don Beaudreault-- "Truth? Is it Ever Possible? We Unitarian Universalists pride ourselves into stating a cardinal principle of our movement:" the pursuit of truth". We use it in our congregational bylaws, in our mission statement-- and indeed, in our very definitionof what UU is. But is "truth" ever possible? Would not a more realistic word be "truths"? Little thuths, at that? Or IS there one big truth?
He has served Unitarian Universalist congregations for over 30 years and is ly the Consulting Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Venice, FL. He holds five academic degrees. Previous to the ministry, he taught English and music in The Philippines, Iran, and American Samoa. In addition, he is a professional jazz pianist who uses his skill to raise money for social justice causes. He is a poet, long-distance competitive runner, and world traveler.

The Florida Humanist Association (FHA)
We have been a member since November 2011. The FHA has a charter from The American Humanist Association with its purpose to support
the growth of Humanism in the state of Florida. Their primary guide, which we endorse, is the Humanist Manifesto III published in 2003
  with (6) major affirmations:
      1)   Knowledge of the world is derived by observation, experimentation, and rational analysis.
      2)   Humans are an integral part of nature, the result of unguided evolutionary change.
      3)   Ethical values are derived from human need and interest as tested by experience.
      4)   Life's fulfillment emerges from individual participation in the service of humane ideals.
      5)   Humans are social by nature and find meaning in relationships.
      6)   Working to benefit society maximizes individual happiness.

Thus engaged in the flow of life, we aspire to this vision with the informed conviction that humanity has the
ability to progress toward its highest ideals. The responsibility for our lives and the kind of world in which
we live is ours and ours alone.         Website:   http://www.floridahumanist.org/

• Miscellaneous Thoughts And Sayings •

You don't go to church to find the people you love.
You go to church to love the people you find. (UUA Moderator Gini Courter)
"Liberal theology is not for the faint of heart.
It points us in a general direction without telling us the specific destination.
It refuses to make our commitments for us, but holds us accountable to the commitments we make ----
It invites us to live with ambiguity without giving in to facile compromise;
to engage in dialogue without trying to control the conversation;
to be open to change without accepting change too casually;
to take commitment seriously but not blindly;
to be engaged in culture without succumbing to the culture's values."
By The Rev. Dr. Paul Rasor director of the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan College
Published by "UU World" Fall 2005 Suggested by a Fellowship President

A Welcome to New Members
The Unitarian Universalist fellowship of Sun City Center is a free religious community welcoming every honest seeker of more humane and meaningful life. We are open to persons who accept the democratic method in human relationships and we welcome persons of any race, belief, sexual preference, or national origin who share our concern for the individual and society.

As we pursue our religious quest, certain general principles guide the way of our individual and collective lives.

• We believe in knowledge,
for there is no help in ignorance.
• We believe in reason,
for without it we can only surrender to the blind forces of prejudice.
• We believe in compassion,
for revenge and hatred destroy the human spirit.
• We believe in love,
for it is life's most creative power.
• We believe in celebrating the dignity and worth of every human being.
for recognition of diversity is part of our common core.
• We offer no guarantee of a future life freed from the burdens of the present,
but we explore and celebrate the ground we stand upon today.
• We offer no bound book of a final revelation,
but we will share with you the loose leaf pages of an ever growing, ever changing bible of human inspiration.

Joining this Fellowship can only strengthen your ties with the world, for it signifies your dedication to the eternal quest for freedom in thought and action.
Original version by Jim Harner UU Church of Brunswick, Main - since revised.

"Unitarian Universalism is faith in people, hope for tomorrow's child, confidence in a continuity that spans all time. It looks not to a perfect heaven, but toward a good earth. It is respectful of the past, but not limited to it. It is trust in growing and conspiracy with change. It is spiritual responsibility for a moral tomorrow." --Ed Schempp, Activist 1908-2003
"The world is now too dangerous for anything but the truth, too small for anything but brotherhood. True religion, like our founding principles, requires that the rights of the disbeliever be equally acknowledged with those of the believer."--A. Powell Davies, Unitarian Minister, 1902-1957
"Stand by this faith. Work for it and sacrifice for it. There is nothing in all the world so important as to be loyal to this faith which has placed before us the loftiest ideals, which has comforted us in sorrow, strengthened us for noble duty and made the world beautiful."--Olympia Brown, Universalist Minister, 1835-1926
"We need to love from the start--not as an emergency strategy when everything has gone wrong."-- Rebecca Parker, Minister
"Each night a child is born is a holy night."--Sophia Lyon Fahs, Religious Educator 1876-1978
"Ultimately, we are all theologians. We all ponder the great life issues. As Unitarian Universalists we celebrate common operational values that unite us even as we enjoy a diversity of perspectives that enables us to learn and grow religiously."--Richard Gilbert, Minister
"The word freedom comes from an ancient Norse root verb that means to become loving. Freedom is not properly a state of being then, but more accurately a choice for becoming. So, in our religion, freedom is about becoming, never about being."--Terry Sweetser, Minister
Love is the spirit of this fellowship and service is its law.
This is our great covenant, to dwell together in peace,
To seek the truth in love, and to help one another.

Treasurer David Sturniolo
Membership Chair Helen Moore
Librarian/Archivist Bill Danek
Publicity/Outreach Bill Danek

The nominees are scheduled to be endorsed by the Congregation at the Annual Meeting on March 28. They will be installed in May. This will be Mary Ann's second stint as President. We appreciate her willingness to serve again. The Committee was disappointed that it could find no one willing to be President-elect. A major duty of this officer is to plan the programs for the coming year. The role of program planner will be filled by a committee led by Dianne Sullivan, Bob Johnson, Jeanne Danek and Mary Ann Worthington.

======================================================================================================================= Farmworkers' Pantry: Every meeting is collection day for the food our Fellowship contributes to the Beth El Farmworkers' Mission. Be generous. Bring nonperishable foods like rice, canned goods, oatmeal, etc. The people at Beth El send their heartfelt thanks. ======================================================================================================================= Michael Luskin: This long-time member of our Fellowship who died last March left a generous bequest to our Fellowship. Our older members remember Mike for his quiet, unassuming friendship. We are grateful that he remembered us. ======================================================================================================================= Membership Note: Evelyn Goldstein, a valued if short-time member of our Fellowship, died late last summer. Many of us recall Evie's happy enthusiasm after she discovered our Fellowship. She was outspoken in her rejection of mainline churches and had long been searching for a group like our Fellowship. She signed our membership book on November 20, 2011. Sadly, only about five months later she felt obliged to resign because her failing health prevented her from attending our meetings. We wish we could have known this vibrant, charming person much longer. ======================================================================================================================= The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Sun City Center held a Retreat at Ruskin's Camp Bayou on Thursday, November 29 with 63% attendance. The agenda included subjects as diverse as time & place of meeting, programming, finances, guest speaker allocation, music, and member responsibilities. The discussions were cordial and frank. It was a very useful exercise and the many people who contributed to make it such a success are to be thanked and congratulated. ======================================================================================================================= Our Fellowship Library is Growing. Some new books are listed below. Librarian Bill Danek reports the recent acquisition of seven books of special interest to our members. This will encourage members to take a more active role in our weekly programs, a point raised during our recent retreat. The library is a rich source of materials to support such efforts--- and even simply to refresh or expand one's knowledge of Unitarian Universalism.
Universalists and Unitarians
in America:
A People's History by John A. Buehrens.
Ethical Intelligence: Five Principles for Untangling Your Toughest Problems
at Work and Beyond
by Bruce Weinstein.
Fluent in Faith: A Unitarian Universalist Embrace of Religious Language by Jeanne Harrison Nieuwejaar.
The Seasoned Soul: Reflections on Growing Older by Eliza Blanchard.
Reaching for the Sun: Meditations by Angela Herrera.
Voices from the Margins: An Anthology of Meditations
Sources of our Faith: Inspirational Readings.

Our food collection for Beth-El’s food pantry in Wimauma received a boost when an anonymous non-member gave us a $100 check to feed hungry farm workers. From now on, members and guests of the Fellowship can continue to feed our hungry neighbors by bringing non-perishable foods ( or money ) to our meetings. Especially at the first Thursday meeting.

The following list includes the most-needed items.

Canned Vegetables Rice
Canned beans (pinto, black and chili beans) Canned Fruit
Cereal Pasta (spaghetti, elbows, rotini etc.)
Tomato Sauce Oatmeal
Condiments (ketchup, mustard) Flour (all-purpose)
Milk (dry) Macaroni and cheese
Pinto beans (dry) Baby food
Maseca (to make corn tortillas) Ritz crackers
Cooking oil Baby Formula (Good Start, Enfamil, etc.)
Fruit drinks (kool-aid) Cash donations:   we will purchase food

From Our President:

Here we are, another new year started, and the time is flying. It is hard to believe that I have been President for five months. One of the interesting things of being President, is I get to open all the mail sent to our address. Sometimes, it is strange, but often lovely. Last month we received a lovely "Seasons Greetings" card from Sew Much Comfort.

I also received a nice thank you letter from Beth El Farmworkers' Mission. These groups rely upon and would fade away without staunch support from volunteers. Doesn't it feel good to know we participate with those groups!

(Guess where this is going).

Well, those of you who regularly volunteer at our weekly Fellowship meetings certainly know how good volunteering feels. I'm proud of you. It would be nice if just a few more would step forward and take the weight off of the few who work every week to make our meetings something you all enjoy participating in. Be Kind!...     It's OK.

Dianne

About Our Fellowship Library

The library of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Sun City Center was originally conceived as a depository of
liberal religious writings not usually available in most Florida public libraries.

The Fellowship library at the present time consists of 179 books organized into 11 categories. These categories are:
           (1) Unitarian Universalism
           (2) Major Religions of the World
           (3) Christianity, the Bible
           (4) Religion, General; the Search, Spirituality
           (5) Humanism, Secularism
           (6) Civil Liberties, Moral Issues
           (7) Noteworthy Authors
           (8) Robert Fulghum and Webster Kitchell
           (9) US History, Biography
       Miscellaneous:
           (10) Meditations and Readings
           (11) Help for UU Congregations.
A listing of the library offerings is located on our book shelf at the Synagogue where we hold our meetings on Thursday nights.

The books are located in the home of the librarian, Bill Danek. Access to these books is 7 days a week 8AM to 8PM
(when the Fellowship is in normal session) whereby a member may explore the listings, peruse the book(s) of choice, and,
if desired, sign-out the book(s) for use at any other location. The book(s) may then be returned by dropping off at Danek’s
home or hand-delivery to Bill at a Fellowship meeting.

Our January 3rd. sermon to include a discussion
about current Humanism events

Note from Dr. Tucker:

Absolutely, this would make a great piece for a sermon.....DISCUSSION.

Why don't we take advantage of the sermon already scheduled which most likely touches on all the issues here: i.e., my very next sermon in JANUARY 3, 2013 is "What UU's Don't Believe" and, in the same way, it covers almost exactly the same territory as what Humanists don't believe...........so,

if everyone will COME PREPARED for the POST-SERMON DISCUSSION by HAVING READ YOUR EMAIL NEWS REPORT ON THE ABUSE OF HUMANISTS VIS-A-VIS THE SHOOTING TRAGEDY, ready with all your/their questions, we will have a FANTASTIC UU/HUMANIST DISCUSSION on precisely the problems raised by this news report. Having in the sermon presented our UU position, I will be most delighted to expand upon that with (for most of us) our Humanist position and why it is so un-liked and feared among the general American population.
